DARRELL L. CASS, MD, FACS, FAAP - FETAL SURGEON / DIRECTOR OF FETAL SURGERY

Cleveland, OH-Darrell L. Cass, MD, FACS, FAAP is recognized by Continental Who’s Who as a Pinnacle Professional in the field of Medicine in recognition of his role as Fetal Surgeon and Director of Fetal Surgery at Cleveland Clinic.

Cleveland Clinic Department of Pediatric Surgery has provided services to the Cleveland-Akron region for decades. Committed to offering quality medical care, this group is skilled in complex medical conditions that affect children of all ages.  Dr. Cass has joined an outstanding group of pediatric surgeons that provide compassionate and comprehensive care for children with cancer, congenital malformations, and other surgical conditions that affect fetuses, newborns or adolescents.

With over twenty-seven years’ experience, Dr. Darrell L. Cass is revered for his outstanding work and contributions to the medical profession.  He practiced in Houston for 18 years where he was Co-Founder and Co-Director of the Texas Children's Fetal Center when it was only 1 of 3 centers in the world to perform successful open fetal surgery for life-threatening fetal malformations such as CCAM and sacrococcygeal teratoma.  Under his leadership, the Texas Children’s Fetal Center gained international recognition, becoming one of the most innovative and successful fetal treatment programs in the world.  He was recruited to develop a similar program at Cleveland Clinic.  Dr. Cass served as a former NIH-funded research investigator for study of scar less fetal tissue repair and fetal vascular wall healing.  He has attained particular expertise in the areas of surgical care and management of congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH), lung malformations (CCAM or CPAM), ECMO, esophageal atresia, chest wall deformities such as pectus excavatum, minimally invasive surgery, newborn surgical conditions, ovarian disorders, and fetal surgery.

Dr. Cass graduated from Stanford University and the UCLA School of Medicine.  He subsequently pursued ten years of training in general surgery, fetal surgery and pediatric surgery from UCSF, Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, and Texas Children’s Hospital.  He has a passion for helping young patients that may suffer spontaneous, but correctable surgical conditions.  He feels “it is an honor and a privilege to have the opportunity to help infants and children and their families.”  He feels blessed to dedicate his life to this career pursuit.

When asked his counsel to newcomers in the field, Dr. Cass states “you have to be on the top of your game.  Work hard and persevere.”  Dr. Cass dedicates this recognition to his dedicated and inspiring mentors: Michael Harrison, MD, N. Scott Adzick, MD, and David Wesson, MD.
