JOSE L. ESTRADA - ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR OF RESEARCH

Fort Myers, FL - Prominently featured in The Inner Circle, Dr. Jose L. Estrada is acknowledged as a Pinnacle Professional Member Inner Circle of Excellence for his contributions to Xenotransplantation and Animal Biotechnology.

Dr. Jose L. Estrada has established an internationally respected career in animal biotechnology, genetics, and xenotransplantation research, earning recognition for groundbreaking contributions that have advanced biomedical science and the pursuit of solutions to the global organ shortage. Through decades of research, innovation, and academic leadership, he has helped shape the fields of reproductive biotechnology and genetically engineered animal models used in medical research.

As founder of Clones and Genes Bioscience LLC, Dr. Estrada provides consulting services in animal biotechnology, gene editing, xenotransplantation, genetics, and advanced reproductive technologies. His expertise encompasses cloning, somatic cell nuclear transfer, embryology, animal reproduction, and embryo transfer, supporting the entire process for the development of genetically modified animal models designed to advance human health and medical science.

Dr. Estrada earned a Doctor of Philosophy in Animal Sciences and Biotechnology from North Carolina State University, specializing in genetics, reproduction, and embryology. He also holds a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree and a Master of Science in Reproduction and Genetics. His extensive academic training laid the foundation for a distinguished career dedicated to scientific discovery and innovation.

Throughout more than 30 years in biotechnology and reproductive sciences, Dr. Estrada has held numerous leadership and research positions. Most recently, he served as Associate Professor of Research at the Miller School of Medicine at the University of Miami, where he advanced xenotransplantation research through the cloning of genetically modified pigs. He previously held research faculty appointments at Indiana University and The University of Alabama and served as Director of the Institute of Genetics and Professor at the National University of Colombia. In addition, he led Colombia’s National Biotechnology Program and National Animal Genetic Resources Program through the Instituto Colombiano Agropecuario (ICA) and Corpoica.

Among his most significant accomplishments is the development of animal models that became foundational for producing genetically engineered pigs for xenotransplantation. His widely cited research, highlighted in a landmark 2015 publication in Xenotransplantation, contributed to efforts aimed at addressing the worldwide shortage of transplantable organs. He also achieved some of the highest reported cloning and pregnancy success rates in pigs using somatic cell nuclear transfer technologies, produced more than 500 cloned piglets, and over 30 different genotypes through genetic editing. He also performed Colombia’s first cattle in vitro fertilization pregnancy and established the nation’s embryo germplasm bank for preserving valuable creole cattle breeds.

Dr. Estrada’s scientific contributions have supported multiple patents and have earned international recognition, including the prestigious Carl Gustav Groth Xeno Prize in 2012 for outstanding achievements in xenotransplantation research.

Beyond his research accomplishments, he serves on the editorial boards of several leading MDPI scientific journals, while also contributing extensively as a peer reviewer of other journals, including Xenotransplantation, Transplantation, Cell Reprogramming, Animals, AgriEngineering, Molecular Endocrinology and Metabolism, Veterinary Sciences, and Bioengineering. His commitment to maintaining rigorous scientific standards continues to influence advancements across the biotechnology community.

Looking ahead, Dr. Estrada and his wife, Dr. Luz Reyes, plan to continue consulting through Clones and Genes Bioscience LLC, remain active in scientific publishing and peer review, complete a book documenting his professional journey and discoveries, and expand his involvement in volunteer and community-based initiatives.
