JOSEPH G. R. MARTINEZ - RETIRED REGENTS PROFESSOR

Albuquerque, NM - Prominently featured in The Inner Circle, Dr. Joseph G. R. Martinez is acknowledged as a Pinnacle Professional of The Year for his contributions to Mathematics Education and Student Success.

Dr. Joseph G. R. Martinez has built a distinguished career in higher education, dedicating nearly four decades to teaching and advancing mathematics education. As a retired faculty member of the University of New Mexico, he is recognized for his commitment to student success and his ability to make complex mathematical concepts accessible to learners at all levels.

Dr. Martinez specialized in mathematics education, graduate statistics, calculus, and algebra, with a particular focus on reducing math anxiety. His teaching approach emphasized patience and step by step instruction, helping students build confidence and develop a deeper understanding of mathematical principles. His methods have inspired many students to pursue further studies and careers in mathematics.

He earned a Doctor of Philosophy in Education and Mathematics, with concentrations in mathematics education and educational psychology, from the University of New Mexico in 1980. His academic background provided a strong foundation for his work in both teaching and research design.

Throughout his career, Dr. Martinez taught at the University of New Mexico until his retirement in 2012 and also held earlier teaching roles at the University of Albuquerque. Over the years, he became widely respected for his engaging teaching style and dedication to supporting student achievement.

In addition to his work in the classroom, Dr. Martinez is an accomplished author, having written eight books and more than 200 published articles. His book Math Without Fear, along with other works including those coauthored with his late wife Nancy, reflects his mission to make mathematics more approachable and less intimidating for students.

Dr. Martinez credits his wife, Nancy, as a key influence in refining his teaching philosophy and instructional methods. Her support and insight played an important role in shaping his approach to education.

Looking ahead, Dr. Martinez is exploring opportunities to expand his educational outreach, particularly within Orthodox Jewish communities. Guided by a philosophy that anyone can learn mathematics with the right support and instruction, he remains committed to sharing his knowledge and helping others overcome challenges in learning.
