R. Terry Hughes, Jr. CBO, CBCO, is recognized by Continental Who’s Who among America’s Leading Building Code / Life Safety Professionals. As an active building code professional and life safety advocate with national reach, Terry is a co-owner of Memphis, Tennessee-based Code Solutions Group (CSG), along with his business partner/fellow code professional Bob Jacobson, CBO, CBCO.
With over 37 years experience, Terry lives and speaks the language of accessibility/life safety, and is enlivened by the challenges presented by code issues. He offers his clients an encyclopedic knowledge of past and present codes that enables him to foresee code-related pitfalls and help clients find innovative and economic solutions to achieve code compliance on their building projects.
Terry’s tenure in the building industry began at the Memphis and Shelby County (Tennessee) Office of Construction Code Enforcement, where Terry was the Building Official and Deputy Administrator overseeing all building construction/inspection within the City and County. After 28 years of service with the code enforcement office he retired in 2001. Terry then joined Hnedak Bobo Group Architects as Senior Associate / Director of HBG Code Consulting, where he provided critical leadership for the firm’s building projects across the country, as well as for other architectural firms, developers, owners and contractors.
As a dedicated life safety advocate, Terry is a noted guest speaker at professional association meetings and conferences, and has presented numerous life safety seminars, including his lecture, “We Can’t Afford to Gamble with Life Safety,” about places of public assembly.
He has been appointed to key leadership positions within several code and life safety-related committees, and is a Past President of the Tennessee Building Official Association, and Founder of the West Tennessee Code Enforcement Association. In 2001, Terry was named the Tennessee Building Official of the Year, the most coveted honor of the association.
Terry’s influence has reached beyond state and even national boundaries. In addition to his role as Code Specialist, Terry has donated his personal time and physical labor as a volunteer in Kenya and Haiti. He is also a knowledgeable P.T. Boat historian, holding his position on the Board of Directors of P. T. Boats, Inc. since 1982.
