Thomas J. Bowles, Ph.D.

Thomas J Bowles, PhD, Chief Executive Officer and Board Chair at the North American Intelligent Manufacturing Initiative, has led an exemplary scientific and senior management career at Los Alamos National Laboratory. He is fascinated by neutrino physics and the structure of the universe, and has led his passions to many successes throughout his career. Dr. Bowles has garnered a commendable reputation for his research, international collaborations and has created programs that have stimulated economic growth. A previous affiliate professor at the University of Washington, Dr. Bowles has been deeply involved in STEM education and workforce development efforts.

A 1973 graduate of the University of Colorado, Dr. Bowles holds a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and Physics and a Doctor of Philosophy from Princeton University in 1978. He was a laboratory instructor of physics at Princeton while studying for his doctoral degree. Previously serving the Environmental Protection Agency in Denver as a WICHE fellow, Dr. Bowles is also a fellow of the American Physical Society and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Notably, he was elected in the following societies: Phi Beta Kappa, Sigma Pi Sigma, and Delta Phi Alpha. 

An active member of the physics community, Dr. Bowles formerly served as the New Mexico representative at the science and technology table for the Border Governor’s Conference between 2006 and 2010, was chair of the international organizing committee of the XXII International Conference on Neutrinos and Astrophysics in 2006 and was vice-chair of the board and American director of the U.S.-Mexico Foundation for Science. From 1976 to 1979, he was a postdoctoral fellow at the Argonne National Laboratory, and then from 1989 to 1991, he served as chairman of the postdoctoral committee at the Los Alamos National Laboratory, where he is a past chief science officer and chief scientist and a current fellow.

Widely-recognized for his expertise in nuclear physics, Dr. Bowles has presented and spoken at more than 100 colloquia, symposia, and conferences and was a principal investigator in Baksan, Russia, for five years. He has lectured at many universities across the globe and has further penned more than 70 articles for professional and scientific journals, which have been cited over 10,000 times.

As a testament to his outstanding achievements, Dr. Bowles has been the recipient of several awards, honors, and accolades throughout his career. He received a New Mexico Rainmaker Award in 2010, the Markov Prize from the Institute for Nuclear Research at the Russian Academy of Sciences in 2003, and the Lushkov Medal in 1997. In 2009, Dr. Bowles was named a New Mexico Energy Executive. Later in his career, he was honored as a New Mexico Nonprofit Titan of Information Technology and was with the Innovation Award from the New Mexico Climate Change Leadership Institute in 2012. 

On a personal note, Dr. Bowles is a 4th degree Black Belt in Taekwondo. He enjoys gardening and reading science fiction.
