
After graduation from high school, Tom J began his career as a Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps scholarship student at the University of Illinois earning a Bachelor of Science degree with high honors in 1960. That same year he married, began his CPA career with Fillbey, Andrews and Filbey, CPAs, in Champaign, IL, began work on his Master of Accounting Science degree at Illinois, and passed the CPA examination.
In 1961, Tom J earned his Master of Accounting Science degree from Illinois and joined Ernst & Ernst, CPAs, in Chicago as a tax staff accountant. In 1966, he was asked to assist the Ernst & Ernst Indianapolis office in auditing life insurance income tax provisions for a client. Significant income tax reductions were discovered. Later that year, he was invited to transfer to the Indianapolis office as a tax executive. He accepted the invitation and he and his wife and two children transferred to Indianapolis later that year.
Following the move to Indianapolis in 1966, Tom J became involved in several clinic and charitable activities. He became a member of the Indianapolis Jaycees where he was later recognized for distinguished service in 1969. He also became involved in the March of Dimes and the Republication party and also began to serve as treasurer of Witanshire Alumni Association.
Tom J became a member of the East 49th Street Christian Church (later East 91st Street) in 1968 where he has had numerous roles including services as a teacher, deacon, and elder (for 25 years including service as elder chairman), financial advisor, member of the church choir (for 33 years), and member of the Sonrise Guys breakfast group (also in 1968), and chairman of the East 91st Street Christian Church Foundation feasibility task force group. In 2013, he became a member of the board of directors of the Foundation.
From 1966 to 1973, Tom J became a leading income tax executive to insurance, banking and other financial clients. In 1973, he accepted an assignment as Tax Officer of the St. Paul Companies, St. Paul, MN, the oldest Minnesota corporation which offered life and property insurance and other financial services. He then solved several years of life insurance income tax matters with the Internal Revenue Service and then decided to return to certified public accounting services with Arthur Anderson & Co., CPAs, Indianapolis in 1974.
Tom J there continued his services to the financial services industry and other clients until 1976 when he co-founded Brinkerhoff, Franklin & Co., CPAs, Indianapolis. Subsequently, he co-founded Ford, Brinkerhoff and Koehler, CPAs, Indianapolis and then Brinkerhoff, Cropper and Associates, CPAs, Indianapolis. These CPA firms provided services to many businesses and individuals in auditing, tax and other financial services. In 2008, Brinkerhoff and Associates, CPAs, Indianapolis was founded. It provides various CPA services to businesses and individuals throughout the U.S. In 2006, Tom J was recognized as a 50-year member of the Indiana CPA Society.
During almost 60 years of CPA service, Tom J also provided start-up financial services to numerous business entities as founder, officer, owner, advisor, investor and other services as needed. Among the entities begun were ICP Manufacturing and Distribution – 2006, ICP Marketing – 2006, Carson Crossing – 2005, The Brinkerhoff Group – 1996, BCA Leasing Company – 1994, Red River Chew – 1994, BCA Investment Management – 1993, Benefit Solutions – 1984, Sentech Corporation – 1996, Brinkerhoff Handy Candy Corporation – 1992, Clean Power Inc. – 1990, ROI Corp. – 1990, Personal Solutions Inc. – 1990, Resources for Management Inc. – 1990, Brinkerhoff- Redmon Properties, Inc – 2004, and Munax LLC – 2005.
