thirty plus years of combined experience in the pharmaceutical industry and in
design work, Intellectual Designs, LLC, offers consultation for matters
relating to intellectual property, pharmaceutical patents, pharmaceutical development,
graphic/web design, and other marketing needs. Ms. Patel provides consulting
and guidance for individualized patent strategies. She also provides
consultation and guidance for drafting and prosecution of US patent
applications.
Leading
a remarkable career in the pharmaceutical industry for over thirty years, Usha
has attained extensive expertise, which includes the areas of medicinal
chemistry, organic chemistry, biopharmaceuticals, drug discovery, drug design,
patent drafting, and patent prosecution. She has been the Managing Member/Owner
of Intellectual Designs, LLC, since February of 2019. Previously, she worked at
Boehringer-Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals for nearly thirty years and at Wyeth
Pharmaceuticals for three and a half years. Her Pharmaceutical career began at
Wyeth Pharmaceuticals as a Research Scientist in the Medicinal Chemistry/Drug
Discovery area. Her career as a Research Scientist continued at Boehringer
Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals (BI). After almost 20 years of work as a Research Scientist,
she took and passed the Patent Bar exam to become a Patent Agent. Usha
subsequently moved to the Legal Department at BI, first as a Patent Agent, and
then ascending to the ranks of Sr. Patent Agent, where she focused on chemical
and biological patent drafting and prosecution, as well as providing patent
strategy for her projects.
Usha
is a seasoned professional, who has constantly set her goals to keep pace with
her highest aspirations for personal excellence. Throughout her career, she has
exhibited exemplary teamwork, expertise, integrity and dedication. Her parents
and high school chemistry teacher have been the greatest source of her
inspiration. Her parents encouraged her to keep learning and growing personally
and professionally. She advises new pharmaceutical professionals to follow the
same advice, enhance their skills, keep an open mind, and network. Being a
woman in a mostly male dominated field, she at first struggled to network and
feel comfortable. Fortunately, she had great mentors and colleagues, who made
networking easier.
Usha earned Master’s degrees in Organic Chemistry from the University of Bombay in Mumbai, India, and from the University of Texas at Austin, in Austin, Texas. Passing the United States Patent and Trademark Office’s (USPTO) Patent Bar exam and requirements, she is a Registered Patent Agent. She is a Co-Inventor on 17 US patents and a Co-Author on 26 scientific publications.
Usha is a member of the American Chemical Society (ACS) and received an award for “Technical Achievements in Organic Chemistry,” from the Organic Chemistry Division of ACS, while working as a Research Scientist. Usha was inducted into its VIP Woman of the Year Circle in 2016, by the National Association of Professional Women (NAPW).
Usha
believes that each and every one of us has something positive to contribute to
our community. She volunteers in career day talks with local students and
encourages them to enter science careers. Currently, she volunteers/mentors at
SCORE Western Connecticut Chapter and volunteers at ASHA for Education, Danbury
Chapter. When she is not working or volunteering, she enjoys reading and
traveling.
Usha
resides in Brookfield, CT with her husband, Rajni, who is also a Pharmaceutical
Scientist. They have a daughter, Anjali, who is a graphic/web designer. Anjali
started her career as a scientist but eventually went into graphic and web
design.
In
the future, Usha plans to expand her business, her education, and her personal
growth.
