WILLIAM J. DUNN, MD - VITREO-RETINAL SURGEON

Dr. Dunn earned a Bachelor of Science from the United States Air Force Academy, where he graduated in the top 10% of his class and received a Medical degree from Georgetown University, School of Medicine. The doctor completed a rotating internship at Andrews Air Force Base in Washington DC., and finished a residency in ophthalmology at Wilford Hall in San Antonio, TX. His surgical retina fellowship was completed at Retina Associates of Cleveland/ Case Western Reserve. Dr. Dunn served 30 years in the United States Air Force, where he was aeromedical support during Desert Storm, and the Chief of Ophthalmology at Andrews Air Force Base. He achieved the rank of Colonel. 

After residency training and twelve years of active duty in the Air Force, Dr. Dunn completed a fellowship in vireo-retinal disease and surgery at Retina Associates of Cleveland Mt. Sinai Medical Center/Case Western University in Cleveland Ohio. He is an ophthalmologist specializing in the treatment of macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and vascular occlusive disease and notes that he is able to cure his patients utilizing lasers and retinal injections.

Dr. Dunn is part of the team of professionals at Central Florida Retina operating out of the office in Daytona Beach, Florida. He joined the practice in January of 2023 after being a part of Florida Retina Institute for more than 31 years, from July of 1991 until December of 2022. According to Dr. Dunn, since its opening in 1979, Central Florida Retina has been devoted to diagnosing and treating diseases of the retina macula and vitreous. The highly-trained board-certified ophthalmologists specialize in diabetic retinopathy macular degeneration vascular occlusive diseases and more. The doctor is board-certified in ophthalmology by the American Board of Ophthalmology (ABO). He notes that the ABO is an independent non-profit organization responsible for certifying ophthalmologists in the United States of America.

Dr. Dunn is affiliated with Halifax Health Medical Center of Port Orange, Halifax Health Medical Center, and is licensed to practice in Florida. The doctor asserts that ophthalmology is a branch of medicine and surgery which deals with the diagnosis and treatment of eye disorders. Ophthalmologists are experts in the disease’s functions and anatomy of the eye. They may provide routine care such as vision testing as well as prescribe and fit eyeglasses or contact lenses. However, ophthalmologists are also surgeons. They repair traumatic injuries to the eye and perform cataract glaucoma and corneal surgery.

Dr. Dunn has been named Top Doctor by Castle-Connolly for twenty-five years in a row. He has also received the Presidents Volunteer Service Award from EyeCare America and the Credential of CHE Certified Healthcare Executive from the American College of HealthCare Executives in 1995. For years of continuous and uninterrupted service, he was awarded the Life Fellow Award by the American Academy of Ophthalmology in 2017 and achieved fellowship status with the American College of Surgeons and the American Society of Retina Specialists.

Dr. Dunn soloed a Cessna 150 at age 16 and now holds an FAA Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) and Single Pilot Jet Rating with over 4500 hours of accident-free flight time achieving the NBAA Safety Award (National Business Aircraft Association). He also holds the USPA D Expert Rating, which is the top license in skydiving with over 255 jumps. The top FAA MASTER PILOT Wright Brothers Award was given to him in October of 2021. Dr. Dunn was promoted to the rank of full Colonel USAF at 19 years of service and later finished his career with more than 30 years of active-duty guard and reserve service to our country.

Dr. Dunn has volunteered on seven third world eye missions (three to Punjab India, three to Dominican Republic, and one to Grenada). He has also been a principal investigator on multiple national clinical studies in VR research. In his spare time, Dr. Dunn enjoys biking, flying, skiing, and traveling the world. He is the very proud father of four adult children and seven grandchildren.
